Composition, Research & Choreography Lab

November 2021 - January 2022

Creativity is the endless associations and connections we have the ability to make when our spirit is free. Our memories and history are the source and freedom is the force for the transformational process of Synthesis.

This lab is aimed at those who want to delve into the movement composition and the art of choreography. The lab lasts 3 months and contains 4 parts: 1. Composition (Practical course), 2. Artistic research (Theoretical course), 3. Individual guidance and 4. Creation and presentation of a short performance.

COMPOSITION
The first part concerns the acquaintance with various compositional ideas concerning: The body, The shape, The time, The space, The image, The eyes, The sound/music, The voice/text, The objects and The contact/partnering.

References will be made to choreographers and improvisers who used these ideas and we will proceed to the practical application of these. The goal is to cover a wide range, so that everyone can find the principles that currently attract them.

ARTISTIC RESEARCH

The second part is theoretical and aims to become familiar with the concept of artistic research. We will explore different artistic processes, focusing on “Why and How”. We will then focus on the personal artistic research: What texts / materials / ideas / processes do I need? How do I turn them into movement? How do I compose them in a choreography?

INDIVIDUAL GUIDANCE

This part includes one-on-one meetings with participants, where we will discuss the process of creation and ways to find solutions to obstacles. A total of 3 meetings, one at the beginning, one in the middle and one at the end with each participant.

PERFORMANCE

The cycle will end with the presentation of the creations of the participants, on January 29 & 30 at Bensousan Han.

* The group will be closed and the participants will grow artistically through Feedback, Collective Thinking, Mutual Support, and the creation of an artistic community / family.

The 3-month Workshop includes:

  • 90 hours of composition practice
  • 20 hours artistic research theory
  • 3 hours Mentoring meeting per participant
  • Performance / presentation at Bensousan Han, at the end of the Lab.

The Workshop is addressed to

APPLICATION FORM

Limited places: up to 12 participants.

Dorothea Mende: I recommend this course to every artist. This course gave me a rich overview over making tools and inspired my own making. It empowered me to connect to my deepest needs as dancer/maker and I finally got also the space to question the values of our current contemporary art society. On top of that I gained psychological insights into my blockages when making/performing. And, last but not least: I got welcomed to an awesome community of people who encourages each other during the process of becoming what we all long for so dearly: an authentic artist, a life survivor and a true need fighter.”
